Cedar Lake Wireless Cooperative

The CLWC is a not for profit cooperative, registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks. We lease fibre-based Internet service, converting it to a 4.5km wireless link to a central location on the shore of Cedar Lake, Yarmouth County, redistributing it wirelessly to homeowners and small businesses around the lake and close adjoining areas. The service encompasses forty-five connections now, with a maximum possible expansion to three hundred homes.

Spurred on by the activity of commercial Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs), a meeting of residents was called to see if they would be interested in setting up an Internet cooperative. In true cooperative style, all costs are shared.

This arrangement gives everyone around the lake access to a reliable Internet service at modern, usable speeds... enough for multiple connections from every home. As well as web browsing and email, people are able to enjoy voice and video teleconferencing, fast, reliable software updates, games and much, much more, all at a monthly cost equal to normal, wired Internet service in urban areas. The only hitch is the initial installation charges. For this the cooperative has accessed a grant from the provincial government for which we are extremely grateful.

In the 21st century Internet service is a vital, essential utility, right up there with electricity. Unfortunately, unprofitable places like rural areas are getting left further and further behind, so we decided to step up to the plate and make things happen ourselves.
